Matariki - Maori New Year

Celebrating Matariki was a tradition that until a few years ago had lapsed in many parts of New Zealand. Hawke’s Bay Wine Country is now leading the way with its revival.

Matariki is a traditional harvest festival that is sometimes called the Maori New Year. The festival’s timing is based on the rising of the Matariki group of stars, the brightest and most famous cluster in the heavens.

Public Dreams Trust is the main organiser of the Matariki events in Hastings.  One of the main events in a month of celebrations is a public festival of fireworks, hot air balloons and more at the Hawke’s Bay Showgrounds. It has been designed as a special feast – for the eyes, of food and also the spirit.

For Matariki celebration, Public Dreams Trust is proud to present a dazzling first for New Zealand – five metre Irdieden fire windmills.  When fired these amazing 5m kinetic sculptures spin in unison for 60 seconds of pyrotechnic fury giving the impression of a giant Stargate opening a pathway to the heavens.
